Model Warships (a.k.a Mikey Waters) offers free downloads to all of his releases via his Facebook page. Often all recorded from the comfort of his bedroom. He is ultimately an artist that could only really exist in today’s climate and this is something to be thankful for. His output is varied and in every possible essence, from delicate ear whisper vocals backed by gentle guitar picks, echoing percussion and gently pulsating electronics to full blown paralysis-inducing sonic explosions (or implosions), he contains that manic and frightful intensity that makes Xiu Xiu such an unpredictable and often terrifying artist. However, for all the variations in style, tempo and tonality what often makes Model Warships head-warpingly interesting, is the production, space and sense of accompaniment he displays and creates. Often songs that have been entirely constructed from the confines of one-room sound like full blown conducted and arranged pieces of work, adding a further sense of either intensity or stark, minimal isolation. This Leeds based artist doesn’t play a huge amount of shows, so cherish it when he does and expect the unexpected.
